The 5 BEST crochet patterns for newbies!

When I first started crocheting amigurumi, I was slow. Like really slow. It would take me forever to finish one single project. But as I kept practicing, my speed improved mightily. Time is your biggest asset when you’re learning this skillset. Intricate patterns look amazing, but you may be in danger of running out of steam with the time and energy they’ll require!

If you’re a baby crochet artist, it can be extremely overwhelming to decide which patterns you’re going to try. There’s definitely no shortage of patterns available! But how do you know which ones are suited for your skill level? Sometimes you have to venture blindly. Once you’ve tried a few, you’ll be able to see at a first glance if the pattern is do-able!

That’s why I’ve put together a list of the the first 5 patterns I think all new crocheters should try out. These patterns encompass the most basic skills you’ll need when it comes to crocheting amigurumi, but also the basic skills of reading patterns! Knowing the difference between a single crochet and a half double crochet means nothing if you don’t know what the pattern is telling you to do!

Each of these patterns are great pieces for beginners that I actually STILL make for markets! They’re crowd favorites and easy! Let me know if you try any of these out!

It wouldn’t be a true Hooked by Honeybee crochet blog without providing you the easiest crochet bee pattern! This basic pattern is something I still use. It has a lot of basic elements of amigurumi crochet, working in the round, increase stitches, decrease stitches, color changes, and sewing on other bits! I highly recommend trying this one out!

This may be one of the easiest patterns around. And if you’re looking for a market bestseller, this is it! I genuinely cannot keep these little chonky chickens in stock at markets!

We’re adding a tiny challenge with this one! The head/body of the jellyfish is so incredibly easy! Plus you’ll get an introduction into my favorite stitch, the Half Double Crochet stitch!

The tendrils are where the difficulty lies with this pattern, but still not overly challenging!

This boba tea was one of the first patterns I tried when I was learning to crochet amigurumi! The shape is fairly simple, which makes it a great project for a beginner! Plus, it’s FREE!

This stingray is a great pattern that does not start with a magic circle! It will give you a chance to practice starting with a chain! Plus he’s just adorable! Try it out in different colors and patterns!

Which pattern is your favorite? I’m constantly on the lookout for easy and new patterns to try out! Hope these give you some starting ideas to launch your crochet skills from!
